The Toy Guy Teams Up With Kids For The Lydia's Toy Chest Charity Drive

Over the weekend, our own Chris Byrne, aka The Toy Guy, joined students from Aronimink Elementary School in Drexel Hill, Pa to provide more than 250 new toys, games, crafts and books for pediatric cancer patients at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP).  The donation is the inaugural toy drive effort of Lydia's Toy Chest to help make life a littel brighter for hospitalized children.

Aronimink students Amy Byrne, 7 and Jennie Byrne, 9 along with Debbie Frederick (Lydia's mother) presented the gifts to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia Child Life Specialist Katrina Mingos.  Mingos says the toys, games, crafts and books make a big difference in the lives of young patients and their families.  Because of health concerns, it's nearly impossible for patients to share toys.  Therefore there's always a need for new items.  The inaugural Lydia's Toy Chest drive was timed to help CHOP at a time of year when such donations are needed most.

Lydia’s Toy Chest was inspired by Lydia Frederick, who was a patient at CHOP.  She spent more than a year at CHOP being treated for cancer. Sadly, Lydia passed away in September 2007, one month before her third birthday.  Lydia’s Toy Chest was started by her friends to honor her memory and help other children.  For more information, please visit http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/lydiaf.

Apple's New 3G iPhone

Yesterday, Apple unveiled the new iPhone 3G, which will go on sale July 11th. This new edition will run on a 3G, or third-generation, network that will allow for much faster Internet browsing wherever a cell phone signal is available. In addition to the faster speeds, the new model also comes with built-in GPS, longer battery life (10 hours of talk time on 2G networks and 5 hours using 3G), support for Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync, new downloadable applications available through iTunes, and a flush headphone jack.

The iPhone 3G also sports a new (and slightly thinner) glossy case in black or white, however, if you want white, you will have to step up to the 16GB model. You might think that all of these new goodies packed into a slimmer phone would mean a higher price but you would be wrong. The 3G iPhone will retail for $199 for the 8GB model and $299 for the 16GB.

This latest, cheaper and faster version could be just what people who have been on the fence about buying an iPhone have been waiting for to take the dive. However, with the current price of gas, we should also ask ourselves, how many times can I fill my tank for $199"

theToyGuy Reviews: Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

Last night I saw Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, the fourth installment in this series that I have grown up with. I was a little nervous heading into the theater since it's been almost 20 years since the last Indy flick. Would Spielberg and Lucas still have what it takes to produce a great action adventure movie or would Crystal Skull become the Phantom Menace of the Jones series?

I'm happy to report that Crystal Skull is a great addition to the previous three films. This latest film takes place in 1957 and finds an older and more cantankerous Dr. Jones (Harrison Ford) still traveling the world in search of artifacts and adventure. Crystal Skull has all the action, excitement, and humor of the previous movies and is definitely the most far fetched, however, you could argue that all these films are complete fantasy. In Crystal Skull, Indy is reunited with Marion Ravenwood (Karen Allen), his love interest from the first film, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and the two, along with Marion's son (Shia LaBeouf) and a pack of evil Russians set out on a quest to discover a golden kingdom and unlock the secrets of a crystal skull.

The movie is packed with action, explosions, and typical Indy fight scenes. All in all, this is a great summer flick for audiences of all ages.
