The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with F.A.F. Inc., of Greenville, R.I., announced a voluntary recall of the “Faded Glory” Lip Gloss, Locket, and Bracelet Sets due to a risk of lead exposure. Bayside Furnishings Recalls Youth Bed Toy Chests

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with Bayside Furnishings (a division of Whalen™), announced a voluntary recall of the LaJolla Boat Bed and Pirates of the Caribbean Twin Trundle Beds. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. The lid supports on the toy chests fail to prevent the lid from closing too quickly, posing an entrapment and strangulation hazard to young children.

This recall involves two styles of Bayside youth beds: the LaJolla Boat Bed and the Pirates of the Caribbean Twin Trundle Bed. The preassembled toy chests are designed in the shape of a ship or boat’s “bow” and attached to the beds as a footboard. The LaJolla Boat Bed toy chest has a hardwood top and white wood base with a blue stripe. The Pirates Boat Bed toy chest has a hardwood top, wheel shape and brown wood base with decorative carvings. These items were sold at Costco and furniture retail stores nationwide and Costco.com from January 2006 through May 2008 for between $700 and $1,400.

Consumers should immediately stop children from using the recalled toy chests and contact the firm for instructions on receiving a free repair kit with replacement lid supports. For additional information, contact Bayside at (877) 494-2536 anytime, or visit the firm’s Web site at www.baysidefurnishings.com to register online for the free repair kit.

Environmentally Friendly Ideas

Going green is more than just a buzz word or marketing gimmick. It's a practice that we should all try integrating into our lives and homes.

Did you know that a Compact Fluorescent Light (CFL) lasts from 8-10 times longer, uses about 75% less energy, and produces 90% less heat while delivering more light per Watt than an incandescent light bulb? They also save you money. One 20 Watt CFL (replaces a 75 Watt incandescent bulb) will save you $66 dollars over the life of the bulb (based on $.12 KWH). If you replace just one 100 Watt incandescent bulb with a 25 Watt CFL, you will save a $74 dollars over the life of the bulb - that's a full tank of gas and then some!

While saving you money, CFL's also save the planet. Replacing one incandescent light bulb with an energy saving CFL bulb will reduce carbon monoxide emission to the atmosphere.

The Toy Guy Teams Up With Kids For The Lydia's Toy Chest Charity Drive

Over the weekend, our own Chris Byrne, aka The Toy Guy, joined students from Aronimink Elementary School in Drexel Hill, Pa to provide more than 250 new toys, games, crafts and books for pediatric cancer patients at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP).  The donation is the inaugural toy drive effort of Lydia's Toy Chest to help make life a littel brighter for hospitalized children.

Aronimink students Amy Byrne, 7 and Jennie Byrne, 9 along with Debbie Frederick (Lydia's mother) presented the gifts to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia Child Life Specialist Katrina Mingos.  Mingos says the toys, games, crafts and books make a big difference in the lives of young patients and their families.  Because of health concerns, it's nearly impossible for patients to share toys.  Therefore there's always a need for new items.  The inaugural Lydia's Toy Chest drive was timed to help CHOP at a time of year when such donations are needed most.

Lydia’s Toy Chest was inspired by Lydia Frederick, who was a patient at CHOP.  She spent more than a year at CHOP being treated for cancer. Sadly, Lydia passed away in September 2007, one month before her third birthday.  Lydia’s Toy Chest was started by her friends to honor her memory and help other children.  For more information, please visit http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/lydiaf.

Apple's New 3G iPhone

Yesterday, Apple unveiled the new iPhone 3G, which will go on sale July 11th. This new edition will run on a 3G, or third-generation, network that will allow for much faster Internet browsing wherever a cell phone signal is available. In addition to the faster speeds, the new model also comes with built-in GPS, longer battery life (10 hours of talk time on 2G networks and 5 hours using 3G), support for Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync, new downloadable applications available through iTunes, and a flush headphone jack.

The iPhone 3G also sports a new (and slightly thinner) glossy case in black or white, however, if you want white, you will have to step up to the 16GB model. You might think that all of these new goodies packed into a slimmer phone would mean a higher price but you would be wrong. The 3G iPhone will retail for $199 for the 8GB model and $299 for the 16GB.

This latest, cheaper and faster version could be just what people who have been on the fence about buying an iPhone have been waiting for to take the dive. However, with the current price of gas, we should also ask ourselves, how many times can I fill my tank for $199"

theToyGuy Reviews: Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

Last night I saw Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, the fourth installment in this series that I have grown up with. I was a little nervous heading into the theater since it's been almost 20 years since the last Indy flick. Would Spielberg and Lucas still have what it takes to produce a great action adventure movie or would Crystal Skull become the Phantom Menace of the Jones series?

I'm happy to report that Crystal Skull is a great addition to the previous three films. This latest film takes place in 1957 and finds an older and more cantankerous Dr. Jones (Harrison Ford) still traveling the world in search of artifacts and adventure. Crystal Skull has all the action, excitement, and humor of the previous movies and is definitely the most far fetched, however, you could argue that all these films are complete fantasy. In Crystal Skull, Indy is reunited with Marion Ravenwood (Karen Allen), his love interest from the first film, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and the two, along with Marion's son (Shia LaBeouf) and a pack of evil Russians set out on a quest to discover a golden kingdom and unlock the secrets of a crystal skull.

The movie is packed with action, explosions, and typical Indy fight scenes. All in all, this is a great summer flick for audiences of all ages.

Wii Don't Know About This One

Back in February , we dedicated more than a week to reporting all that we saw at Toy Fair. One item we didn't mention was the Carmen Electra Stripper Pole (yes, we are serious). We were a bit stumped as to why this item was being shown at Toy Fair but there it was.

It appears that we may now be able to answer the question of why the stripper pole was at Toy Fair. Last week a story made it's way across the web that claims the stripper pole is going to be part of the next Wii Fit game. Sounds hard to believe until you consider this; Apparently fitness centers across the country now offer pole dancing as an aerobics class and people are signing up in droves to try it out. If people are willing to try this out in front of a class, then chances are good that a home video game version could become a huge success.

We don't have any details, such as when it will be available and how much it will cost, but you can rest assured that we will follow this story and keep you updated.

Iron Man the Movie

Last night the Toy Guy and I were invited to attend a screening of the new Iron Man movie, which opens in theaters tomorrow (Friday). As a comic book reader and huge fan of comic book movies I've been looking forward to this movie for years and headed to the theater yesterday both excited and nervous. Nervous because let's face it, for every great comic book movie, like X-Men or Spider-Man, there are just as many disappointments (ahem Elektra, Hulk).

I'm happy to say that Iron Man was a blast! The movie is an adaptation of Marvel's comic book series about a flawed billionaire weapons manufacturer - Tony Stark - who after a life-threatening experience, creates a suit of armor and takes to the sky to fight the bad guys. I have to admit, Iron Man has never been one of the comics on my reading list so I can't say how true to the comic the movie was. What I can say is that this is a great action movie with amazing special effects and a fantastic cast, which is led by Robert Downey Jr., as Tony Stark/Iron Man. Downey was perfect as the smug, jet-setting, playboy and the rest of the cast, including Terrence Howard (Jim Rhodes), Jeff Bridges (Obadiah Stane) and Gwyneth Paltrow (Pepper Potts) were equally as impressive. The only odd casting was the film's director, Jon Favreau, playing Stark's driver/buddy who was in every scene of the first 15 minutes of the film then disappears entirely without any reason given as to why.

The movie opens in theaters Nationwide tomorrow.

High School Musical: Summer Session Auditions

What's better than watching High School Musical for the zillionth time, experiencing the action and excitement of the movies brought to life on ice, or decorating your bedroom in everything HSM? How about staring in Disney's new reality series, "High School Musical: Summer Session."

That's right! If you (or your kids) are between the ages of 16 and 22, and have always dreamed of answering the call of the stage, then head to one of the two open auditions for this new Summer series. West coast auditions will take place Sunday, April 27, at the Long Beach Arena in Long Beach, California. East coast auditions will be on Wednesday, May 7, at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida. The exact location is the Champion Stadium at Disney's Wide World of Sports complex.

The series debuts on ABC on Sunday, July 20 (8:00-9:00 p.m., ET) and runs Sundays and Mondays (8:00-9:00 p.m., ET) for three weeks, then continues Mondays at 8:00 p.m., ET through mid-September. The two auditions will become part of the early episodes of the show (ala American Idol) and the finalists will participate in a summer music program with the ultimate prize of joining the "High School Musical" gang.

Don't worry if you can't make it to one of these two auditions. According to ABC.com, casting scouts are searching the country looking for undiscovered talent who they think deserve a chance to try out. The scouts will select some of these individuals to be brought to the final auditions, before a panel of judges, which will be held as the final phases of the open calls. The information leaves out exactly where these scouts will be looking so you might want to play it safe and break into song and dance any time you are in a crowded area.

Induct Your Favorite G.I. JOE Figures into the Hall of Heroes Line

In 1982, Hasbro launched a radically different line of G.I. JOE action figures, which were scaled down from 12" to 3-3/4". G.I. That celebration continues this year and now fans and collectors are being invited to participate. Starting yesterday, April 15th, All 62 single-carded 3-3/4-inch figures released through 2008 are listed on GIJOE.com, where fans are asked to vote for their favorite. The ten figures with the most votes will be announced at the G.I. Our First Guest Post - Politics 101: How to Get Elected to Office by Jim Silver

Washington Governor Chirs Gregoire last week signed the most rigorous toy safety law in the U.S.. While, protecting children's safety must be a top concern of anyone purchasing products, we believe that this is misguided legislation that has been rammed through the legislature on emotionalism and in direct opposition to established science.

Our friend and colleague Jim Silver of ANB Media is one of the few people willing to take a stand on this legislation and call it what it really is: election year grandstanding designed to create the illusion that things are really being accomplished to ensure greater safety for children.

He makes many good points, and we encourage you to read and seriously consider his views:

Politics 101: How to Get Elected to Office
By Jim Silver

Governor Chris Gregoire recently signed a bill for the state of Washington that will ban about 33% of all toys. The bill, to commence in July 2009 will outlaw toys with batteries because they will exceed the lead content the state will allow in toys. The amount of lead they’re allowing in toys is only 20% of the federal regulations.

The purpose of this bill? Toy safety? No, but to win elections. How do you win an election? You take a hot topic, like children’s safety. You yell about lead, how unsafe it is, and stir up your legislature and the people into a frenzy. You scare the public and talk about how you will make their children safer. You talk about the lead in toys, and how you will get rid of the lead. You impose strict regulations on lead in toys, 7x stricter than the federal guidelines. Guidelines so strict, that toys with internal batteries won’t pass the permissible amount of lead allowed. Then, you make exemptions for Video Games. We all know kids don’t play with video games, that they never have the wireless controllers in their hands. Exempt, because Microsoft and Nintendo are two of the biggest companies in Washington (and I am a huge fan of Wii and Xbox, consider them 100% safe, and tons of fun.) But you can’t hurt two of your state’s largest corporations.

And you then exempt BB and pellet guns, because guns aren’t dangerous like toys. iPods and cell phones are also exempt, because we all know kids don’t use these either.

Does this sound like a total fiction? I only wish.

Dr Garry Gardner, the chairman of the American Academy of Pediatrics committee on injury, violence and poison prevention has been quoted saying “I think people don’t always worry about the right things." The facts are the real dangers to children are small choking hazards, balloons, marbles and magnets that can become dislodged. These small choking hazards have lead to over 95% of all child related deaths the past ten years. As for lead...0%.

There are numerous scientific studies to show that lead paint in houses has been the greatest danger to lead poisoning. But that won’t win elections. Governor Gregoire said she will revisit the toy category after the 2008 election. How convenient!

State by State regulation will create chaos. Toy stores will open in Oregon on the state line. In order to get the hot toys, you will have to “cross the border”. What about amazon.com, who is based in Washington. Will they now be prohibited to sell in state? How about out of state? Or will they also get a special exemption? A black market will be created and the consumer will suffer.

We are going through tough economic times. People are fighting to pay their bills and put food on the table. Gas prices are hurting all aspects of businesses. We have serious problems for the serious politicians to resolve. I just hope some of these politicians will stand up this year and address the real issues this country has to face.

Space Invaders Invading Our Lives for 30 Years Now

Hard to believe it but the original arcade game, Space Invaders, is 30 years old this year. Japan's Taito corporation and Yahoo Japan are making a big deal of this anniversary. You can play the original game online for free here. Surprisingly, this game is just as much fun to play now as it was 30 years ago. Although now that I think about it, I wasn't even playing video games 30 years ago.
